Ask the Consumer Products Safety Commission to Clarify New Child Products Rules to Protect Safe Handmade Toys and Clothes

The Consumer Product Safety Information Act (CPSIA) is a landmark law that will protect our children from dangerous chemicals. But it could have a negative impact on small craftmakers by requiring them to do testing on products already understood to be safe. Tell the Consumer Products Safety Commission to make sure that the CPSIA doesn't have unintended consequences for craftmakers!

Dear Commissioner Nancy Nord

As a member of MomsRising.org, I am pleased that the CPSC is taking action to protect out kids from dangerous products. I believe the safety and health of our children are paramount. However, when implementing the Consumer Product Safety Information Act, I ask you to consider the unique needs of craftmakers, as well as the consumers of handmade children’s items. The manufacture and sale of natural, toxic-free, handmade children’s products is a cherished part of our economy, and I want to make sure we protect and empower this largely mom-driven industry as we move forward with improving safety standards for all children’s products. 
   
In order to protect crafters, the CPSC must issue specific guidance on the application of the law for handmade product manufacturers, expand the list of common sense, known toxic-free materials that can be used, and allow craftmakers to use components that have been tested by their manufacturers for safety.
   
The CPSC should quickly evaluate the adequacy of existing certification programs, or support the establishment of other programs that require that handmade children’s product manufacturers use only certified non-toxic components and materials.  
   
I support commonsense child safety standards, and I commend your important work in advancing the safety standards for children’s products. Please take these requested actions to ensure safe, handmade children’s products remain available for consumers, and to protect small home businesses.
