  • Equal Pay for Equal Work. It's Only Fair.

Yesterday, the Senate failed to pass the Fair Pay Act. What was almost worse than that defeat, were the out-of-touch, old-fashioned--and downright insulting--statements about women. Senator McCain, who didn’t even come to vote, said that instead of legislation allowing women to fight for equal pay, they simply need "education and training."

Lilly Ledbetter, whose Supreme Court case led to the creation of the Fair Pay Act, didn't need "training". She needed Fair Pay. Women today make up 56% of college graduates and nearly half of the labor force in this country. Yet women make only 73 cents to a man's dollar, and mothers only make 60 cents, for the exact same job.

Sign the petition below in support of the Fair Pay Act. And for good measure, send Senator McCain your resume. Our goal is to send him 100,000. Think he'll get the point?

  • Breastfeeding and Paid Family Leave go hand-in-hand

Today 51% of new mothers have no paid leave of any kind, yet the majority of mothers with infants are in the labor force. This helps explain why only only 13.6% of U.S. infants are exclusively breastfeeding and only 43% are breastfeeding at all at six months of age, even though every major medical authority recommends it.

Exapnding and strengthening Paid Family Leave programs are a key step towards giving mothers the time and support they need to begin and establish breastfeeding.  A number of studies have shown that maternity leave has a positive impact on how long women breastfeed.  Right now, the U.S.  is one of only 4 countries in the world without family leave policies.

Sign the petition today!  We'll deliver it to key legislators who can, with our urging, move Paid Family Leave forward.

  • Thank you, First 5 California!

Join us in thanking First 5 California for their decision to provide funding that will ensure 200,000 kids in California keep their healthcare coverage in the coming year.

We will deliver your signatures on a “Thank You!” card with flowers to the First 5 staff and Commissioners. We will also deliver your signatures to the state’s legislative leaders to remind them that we’re still looking to them for leadership too.

  • Marriott Hotels, Don't Blame the Victim!

A mom, with her two toddlers watching, was raped at gunpoint in her minivan in the garage of a Connecticut Marriott. Recent news reports say Marriott is defending themselves from liability in court by claiming the mom "failed to exercise due care for her own safety and the safety of her children and proper use of her senses and facilities."

Tell Marriott to stop blaming the victim! Please sign the petition below.

  • Celebrate the success and power of women in business!

To celebrate Women and Business Week, share your thoughts about women in business today!  What are your hopes and dreams? The number of women-owned businesses has been sky rocketing. For the past several years women have been starting businesses at double the rate of the general American public, and many of these new business owners are women of color.

  • Give Wal-Mart the demerits they deserve!

One of the best ways to stop the spread of the flu (like H1N1) is for sick people to stay home. But Wal-Mart gives employees "demerits" that can lead to termination if they call in sick!

We think the real demerits should go to Wal-Mart for their bad sick days policy, which risks making the public sick and their employees sicker.

Give Wal-Mart a "Demerit Badge" by signing the petition today! We'll deliver your signatures, along with real demerit badges, to Walmart executives to call them out for their terrible sick days policies.

  • Tell your Senator: Bring Paid Sick Days to a Vote!

Thanks to your emailed letters, the Senate Labor and Workforce Development Committee passed the Paid Sick Days bill a few weeks ago. Yeah! Now it rests with Senate Committee on Rules and Ethics (where all bills go to wait to be voted on by the full Senate). But, Senate leaders haven't moved the bill forward.

Help jump-start them to action! Tell you Senator that you want Paid Sick Days brought to a vote by the full Senate now:

  • Urge Your Congresspeople to Protect Kids from BPA!

BPA has been linked to many chronic diseases and disorders--and fetuses, babies, and children are especially vulnerable. Please urge your Senators and Representative to co-sponsor and support the "Ban Poisonous Additives Act of 2009" which would eliminate BPA from products children use every day including baby bottles, cups, and formula can linings.

  • Support the Breastfeeding Promotion Act!

Every major national and international medical authority recommends that infants are fed exclusively breast milk until they are at least 6 months old.  Right now, only 12% of mothers in the U.S. are exclusively breastfeeding when their babies are six months old. This is often due to the fact that many workplace structures make continuing to breastfeed nearly impossible.  We need common-sense workplace policies to ensure that moms who want to breastfeed can!

Urge your Members of Congress to support the Breastfeeding Promotion Act today.  The bill would support employers and nursing moms to continue breastfeeding by:
        * Providing tax incentives for businesses that establish private lactation areas in the workplace;
        * Requiring employers to make reasonable efforts to provide appropriate space and break time for mothers to express milk;
        * Protecting breastfeeding women from being fired or discriminated against in the workplace; and
        * Allowing families to deduct the cost of breastfeeding equipment on their taxes.

Send a letter to your Members of Congress today asking them to co-sponsor this important legislation!

  • Fuel up for paid sick days!

The Healthy Families Act is gaining momentum in Congress toward becoming a law, but just like a car stops moving if you don't give it a little gas, our bill won't keep moving forward unless we give it some fuel!  Whether you're thanking your legislators for co-sponsoring already, or asking legislators who haven't cosponsored to do so, your letters will make a big difference in keeping the MOMentum going for paid sick days!

  • Support a CA Budget That's Strong for Kids and Families!

The Governor is holding on to the idea of balancing the CA budget on the backs of our kids and most vulnerable families.  Cuts to education, healthcare coverage, and even our state poison control center are on the table.  Yet there are options to bring money in the door, such as through fees on oil extraction and tobacco and alcohol taxes.

Tell the Governor and our legislative leaders that reducing or eliminating programs that benefit kids and families is wrong-- especially when there are strong revenue raising options!

  • Tell the Governor to Secure Healthcare for Kids Before Celebrating!

Governor Schwarzenegger may be celebrating his birthday, but today is no day for a party for nearly one million of California's children.  Without the affordable health coverage that California's Healthy Families Program provides, thousands of families are now left teetering on the edge of medical bankruptcy and worse.

Family economic security -- let alone a healthy, productive society-- doesn't happen without secure healthcare coverage.  Tell the Governor to support California families by ensuring that all our state's children are covered!

  • Tell Your Senator--We're Ready For The Challenge!

Tell your Senator that the children in our country are ready for the Early Learning Challenge Grants Fund legislation!  These grants will help build comprehensive, high-quality early learning programs for children under age 5-- programs that every child deserves access to.

The bill already passed the House, now it's up to our Senators-- Tell them to support the Early Learning Challenge Grants Fund Today!

  • Governor Schwarzenegger, "What are you waiting for?"

Governor Schwarzenegger has just four days left to sign two bills that would end discrimination against women in health coverage and also make coverage more affordable for women in California.

The California legislature approved these bills and stood up for women – now it’s time for the Governor to do the same.  We need him to sign these two bills: AB 119 ends the practice of “gender rating,” the discriminatory practice of charing women more just for being women, in the individual market.  AB 98 would require insurance companies provide maternity care in most individual health insurance plans.

Contact Governor Schwarzenegger right now to tell him you support equality for women in healthcare!

  • Ask Congress to wear a pin for children's healthcare!

Call your Members of Congress and ask them to wear their support for children's healthcare on their sleeve -- literally! We're delivering pacifier lapel pins to every member of Congress and we need you to encourage them to send us a photo of themselves wearing the pin. We'll post those photos on our website, creating a wall of fame for members of Congress who won’t be pacified until we have a health reform plan that is a win for children and families.

Call Congress and tell them: "We're pinning our hopes on you because children need health reform too."

Once you've called them, send the letter below and then fill out our questionnaire on the next page to let us know how your call went. This also helps us keep track of how many calls were made so we can report back to Congress later.

Phone numbers for your Senators and Representative are below their photos. Here's a sample script for you:

Hi, I’m calling from MomsRising.org and I’d like to speak to a healthcare staffer about our campaign to make sure Congress delivers a health reform plan that is a win for children and families.

If not available, ask to leave a voicemail for them:

Hi, I’m NAME, one of over a million members of MomsRising.org who wants to make sure that our kids also benefit from health reform by building on the success of CHIP. We need to ensure that all children are assured coverage, and that coverage is affordable for all families.

Recently, we delivered a lapel pin to your office. Today, we are following up to let you know how your Senator/Representative can show the thousands of MomsRising members in STATE that s/he won't be pacified until Congress delivers a health reform plan that meets kids' needs. Participating is easy:

    1. Have the Senator/Representative wear the pacifier lapel pin that was delivered to your DC office.

    2. Take a photograph of the Senator/Representative wearing the pin by Tuesday, November 10th.

    3. Email the photograph to julia@momsrising.org

Then thank them and let them know that if they have any questions or need another pin, they can contact julia@momsrising.org.

  • We're pinning our hopes on you because children need health reform too!

Send your Members of Congress a letter now asking them to wear our MomsRising pin, and to send us a quick photo of themselves wearing our pin so we can post it on our website to celebrate their support for children and families. Also, if one of your legislators already sent us a photo, you can send them a thank you note, too!

  • Thank the Governor and Asm. Jones for supporting fair insurance pricing for women!

Governor Schwarzenegger has signed a bill that stops insurance companies from charging women more than men for the same health insurance coverage.  Assemblymember Dave Jones, the bill's author, wanted to make sure that insurance companies can't unfairly discriminate against women.

Please take a moment to thank Assemblymember Jones and Governor Schwarzenegger today!

  • Tell your Representative to vote YES on the health reform bill!

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on its health reform bill as early as this weekend. And the vote is expected to be very close. Tell your Representative to vote YES on The Affordable Health Care for America Act, H.R. 3962.

  • Thanks for sending a letter to your Representative!

Now can you take it one step further and call their office, too? At this critical point, we need to bombard our legislators from all sides!

Call your Representative and ask them to vote YES on the House health reform bill, The Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962)

Once you've called them, send the letter below. In addition to making absolutely sure your voice is heard, this helps us keep track of how many calls were made so we can report back to Congress later.

Phone numbers for your Representative are below their photos. Here's a sample script for you:

Hi, I'm ________ from ___city___ and a member of MomsRising. I'm calling to ask you to vote YES on the Affordable Health Care for America Act. It's time to fix our broken health care system. Thank you.

  • Urge Speaker Quinn to pass paid sick days this year!

Paid sick days could soon become a reality for New Yorkers! 39 out of 51 City Council members have signed on in support of the bill to establish paid sick days in NYC. This legislation can be passed if it is brought to a vote, so send a letter now urging Speaker Quinn to pass paid sick days this year!

  • Tell Congress to support the Healthy Families Act!

Like 57 million people in the U.S., Desiree is not allowed to earn any paid sick days at her job.  So on Tuesday, she testified before a Senate Committee about her family's experience with getting the flu and not having any paid sick days:

"Families like mine need to be able to earn paid sick days – so we don’t have to borrow from our rent money and go deeper into debt every time our kids get sick...having no paid sick days has really hurt our family’s finances and economic stability."

The H1N1 flu shines a light on the problems that working families face every flu season. And leaders are taking notice!  White House endorsed the Healthy Families Act, which lets working people earn a minimum number of paid sick days per year. But White House endorsement is only one step toward the Healthy Families Act becoming law.  Send a letter now to your members of Congress asking them to support this important piece of legislation, and to work with their colleagues to get it passed as soon as possible.

  • Tell your VT state legislators to pass the paid sick days bill now!

Vermont could become the first state in the country to guarantee workers the right to earn paid sick days. But we need your help to make this a reality. Send a letter to the Vermont House and ask them to pass the paid sick days bill they're considering right now!

  • Tell the Governor - Early learning matters to all of us!

The Governor is going to release her budget in the first week of December.  Whether or not she funds early care and education programs will have a big impact on early care and education and on the statewide early learning plan that parents worked so hard to influence last week. We can't let her forget that in a tough economy, early learning matters more than ever. Families are in crisis and many childcare workers don't make a living wage.

Tell the Governor to prioritize early learning today!

  • Light a fire to get paid sick days cooking in MA!

Everyone is talking about it:  Experts are saying you need to stay home if you're sick, but 1.4 million workers in Massachusetts aren't allowed to earn paid sick days, making it diffuclut if not impossible to follow this advice.  Public pressure is growing to do something about this public health and economic security problem, but a bill that would address this problem is moving incredibly slllooowwwlllyyy through the Massachusetts Legislature.  In fact, the bill is pretty much standing still.

Get this bill moving!  We need to light a fire under the MA legislature to get the paid sick days law cooking. Tell your Massachusetts legislators to move the paid sick days bill forward now!

Send a letter now asking her to bring the paid sick time bill to a vote right away.

  • Support the four that help our kids thrive!

Right now, our Governor is finalizing her budget. Tell her today to prioritize early learning today with four specific programs that are proven to help children and families succeed:

  • 1 In 4 children in our nation on the brink of hunger is an emergency

Senators are debating health reform right now.  This is the time to urge your Senators to make sure health reform is done right for kids and families!

  • MomsRising is in Olympia today-- make us louder!

We're bringing the Governor's office some preschool cheer to remind her just how important childcare and preschool are to Washington families. Can you help build the momentum?

Tell Governor Gregoire to be on the lookout for MomsRising members and, like them, you support childcare, preschool and early learning in Washington:

  • This Holiday Season, I Wish for Health Reform

    Dear Senator

This holiday season, we wish for every American family to have the secure, affordable, quality health care that we all deserve. Please move swiftly to make this wish a reality.

Sending a holiday card will show our support for senators already working hard for reform, and remind the rest that their constituents are counting on them to stand up for us when it matters the most.

In order to address your message to the appropriate recipient, we need to identify where you are.

  • Tell your Senators to Vote Yes on the Senate Healthcare Bill

We are just days away from a crucial vote in the Senate on health reform.  We need to make sure the voices of moms and families are heard that we cannot afford to wait for healthcare reform. Send a letter to your Senators now telling them to vote YES for healthcare reform that helps our nation's families.

  • Tell Senator Lieberman to Vote Yes on the Senate Healthcare Bill

We are just days away from a crucial vote in the Senate on health reform.  We need to make sure the voices of moms and families are heard that we cannot afford to wait for healthcare reform. Send a letter to Senator Lieberman now telling him to vote YES for healthcare reform that helps our nation's families.

  • Tell your Senators to get health reform done -- and get it right for kids and families!

A vote is expected tomorrow on the Senate health bill, and if the bill passes the Senate, then we'll need to make sure that the bill continues to improve in the negotiations between the House and the Senate, so we need to start pumping up the volume for kids!

Tell Congress:  Get health reform done--and get it right for kids and families!

  • Make sure healthcare is affordable and reliable!

Right now, each Congressional Representative is compiling a list of their priorities for the final healthcare reform bill to submit to their leadership and we need to WEIGH in!

Tell your representatives and the leaders of Congress that the final healthcare reform bill must ensure affordable and reliable healthcare coverage for all children and families.

  • Don't let this get lost on your Mass. Legislator's desk!

Today, Thursday, January 7th, your legislators are receiving a special delivery from our partners in the fight to win paid sick days for everyone in Massachusetts.  This special delivery includes an important report -- a Health Impact Assessment -- that outlines the health (and economic) benefits that Massachusetts would realize if it had a paid sick days law.

This information is too important for our Legislators to ignore.  Send your Massachusetts Legislators an email today to make sure they got their delivery--and that they read it!

  • Tell Your Representative-- Hungry Children Can't Wait

1 in 4 children in our nation are on the brink of hunger; and we need to fight together to get them help right away.  Urge your Representative to make sure children have access to healthy foods as soon as possible.

  • Moms are in Olympia Today- Double Their Impact!

  • We won't take, "Ooh, this is too hard" for an answer.

Congress needs to hear from us now more than ever. Send them a letter now urging them to get back to work and figure out how to pass comprehensive health reform.

  • Where's Our Dough?

Send a letter to your Senators now asking them to co-sponsor and quickly pass the Paycheck Fairness Act!

  • Act now to make sure key programs don't expire next month!

The recession is far from over on Main Street, so programs set up to help struggling families shouldn't end either. Several critical programs are set to expire in February! Urge President Obama and Congress to act now to continue key economic supports for families like unemployment insurance extensions.

  • Mainers need Paid Sick Days!

Maine's Paid Sick Days bill is moving through the legislature right now. We already know the corporate lobbyists who oppose the bill have been speaking up. Now, it's your turn to make your voice heard -- loud and clear!

  • Don't let Congress put healthcare on the back burner!

If Congress doesn't hear from constituents now, they may put comprehensive healthcare reform on the back burner forever. Tell Congress, the moms and dads of America are multi-tasking and we expect you to do the same. Get healthcare reform and a jobs bill done at the same time!

Send a letter to Congress now!

  • We need a vote on Paid Sick Days!

The Massachusetts State Legislative Joint Labor and Workforce Development Committee is currently reviewing the Paid Sick Days bill, and they could vote on it this week. But the committee won't bring it to a vote unless they get pressure from YOU.

Send an email to your legislators today asking them to make sure a vote happens for Paid Sick Days bill NOW!

  • Keep Washington Families Working!

Many Washington parents are in danger of losing their childcare due to budget cuts.  In fact, as many as 2,500 families across Washington state could lose access to childcare each month  if proposed cuts pass. Loosing child care completely means economic disaster for a lot of families. Too often when parents lose their child care, they can't get to work, and stable family incomes along with health care benefits are lost.

Our legislature is negotiating our state budget right now. Urge your legislators to protect the Working Connections Child Care program and help families get to work!

  • Urge your Legislators to Support the BPA-Free Baby Products Act!

Your legislators’ support is imperative to the success of this bill.  Contact your representatives today and let them know that you care about this issue!  Ask them to support the BPA-free baby products bill in 2010.

  • Get Your Washington Legislator Dancing!

Critically important and effective early learning programs that support young children and families are in jeopardy of being cut just when families need them most. So we've got to let legislature know that families care deeply about these programs! Help us make sure your legislators hear about our sing-a-long-for-learning from every direction (from you and the music pouring out of the Capitol).  Maybe we'll even get them dancing with us today!

  • take an action

this is important and you should do it now!
